  • Programs
    • Quarterly speaking engagements
    • Annual Event Subcommittee
    • Networking and resource sharing forums
  • Marketing & Communications
  • Sponsorship

Community Involvement & Volunteering

To our Members,

The AzHREF Board of Directors encourages our members to volunteer their services to
worthy nonprofit organizations with needs in our general areas of expertise. We know that as HR leaders we may desire to find opportunities to give back, but we may not always know about organizations that may be in need of our experience and skills. This segment of our website will inform you of organizations and/or events that can benefit from expertise in our profession. On behalf of our Board of Directors, we hope that you will use this information to find meaningful ways to support and give back to our community.

Sincerely,
Cathy Chess, President

UMOM

UMOM New Day Centers is one organization that currently has needs that you might want to consider. Their objective is to help homeless, at-risk families become self-sufficient and independent. This is accomplished through longer-term housing and a continuum of services to support self-sufficiency.

As part of their services, UMOM sponsors a Job Search Boot Camp, which needs volunteers for 2-3 hours per day for two days of each month. One of our members, Dick Fincher, has served as a monthly volunteer with UMOM for a year, and he has spoken with the board about the value of this program to the participants.

The Job Boot Camp generally includes a resume writing workshop on Monday afternoons with a mock interview workshop on Thursdays. In addition, there is a need to support some residents in obtaining their GED degrees. You’ll find a full description of volunteer opportunities with UMOM attached.

If you (or others in your organization) are interested in volunteering at UMOM, please contact:
Susan Gitell, Employment Specialist
UMOM: New Day Centers
3333 East Van Buren , Phoenix, Az 85008
602-889-3136

Following is a testimonial from one of our members who is actively volunteering
with UMOM:

“The clients of UMOM are highly appreciative of the time we take to give them support in getting back to the workplace. UMOM has a full time Administrator who is very organized and has expertise in utilizing volunteers effectively.

Any experienced H.R. professional has the skills to help the clients of UMOM. One does not have to be an H.R. Executive or even specialized in Staffing. If you’ve ever done any interviewing and evaluated resumes, you can be of value at UMOM. It’s a great organization to be involved with and I encourage other members of AzHREF to consider UMOM as an opportunity for community involvement.”

Fresh Start Women’s Resource Center

Fresh Start Women's Foundation is an Arizona-based non-profit organization dedicated to helping empower women through the services of the Jewell McFarland Lewis-Fresh Start Women's Resource Center. This Center, the first comprehensive self-help center for women in the country, opened in October 2002 and currently provides resources to more than 2,500 women a month. Their mission is “To empower women to transform their lives through engagement and education. Connecting Women - Changing Lives.”

There are several opportunities to volunteer, but those most suited to the expertise of our profession include Career Coaching, Career Oriented and Life Skills Workshops and Mentoring.

A current AzHREF member, Jayne Phillips, has volunteered as a Career Coach and Workshop Presenter with Fresh Start for a few years. Jayne says “The opportunity to work with women from diverse backgrounds and circumstances has been so interesting. The women who come to Fresh Start are seeking just that – an opportunity to chart a new path in their life. Our ability to educate and empower can make a significant difference in their lives.”
If you (or others in your organization) are interested in volunteering at Fresh Start, please contact:
